Following on from their recent article on how pets are often used as pawns in messy separations, Animal Friendly Life have published another article featuring Tiyce & Lawyers Principal Michael Tiyce, in which he argues for a change to the Family Law Act.

In the Act as it stands, pets are regarded as property, so are treated no differently to other property like cars or furniture. Any pet owner would take issue with that, and as the human of Tiyce & Lawyers’ pupperlegal Ferdinand, Michael feels quite strongly about it!

The law regards pets as property, which means that during property settlements, the court is more concerned about ownership and financial contributions rather than the welfare of the pet. – Michael Tiyce
