As Wills and Estate solicitors we hear comments like the title of this post all too often. Mostly, they are said jovially and when people are having a difficult discussion about what they want to do with their property when they die.

While you can in fact leave everything to the cats and dogs’ home, that is not as common a decision as sharing your estate between your spouse, children, extended family and friends.

Recently, a Melbourne based animal shelter the Lost Dogs’ Home received $3.6 million from a late animal lover who had made a bequest in her will to the organisation. The deceased woman had adopted many a beloved pet dog from the organisation throughout her lifetime. The bequest will reportedly go to updating the onsite animal accommodation, building a new veterinary clinic and animal adoption centre at Cranbourne branch of The Lost Dogs’ Home in Melbourne’s south-east.

Anyone who has visited our website or office will instantly see we are animal lovers – Ferdinand is happy to say hello should you visit and Luna is our part-time pupper-legal, providing much needed support and licks to clients requiring support throughout their family law appointments.
